Diversity Among VAND Members

From the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Board of Directors:

The Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics support and promote diversity and inclusion among its members and within our profession. We are troubled by the events that have occurred in our nation that have had profound impacts on the Black/African American, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC).

Within the Commonwealth of Virginia we have observed hundreds gathering throughout the state to protest our own state’s horrific past. As many of you are aware, our state played a pivotal role in the Civil War, as  home to the Confederate States of America capital. While our state’s past supported slavery and racial inequality among individuals of African descent, our state dietetic association stands in solidarity with our BIPOC members and their communities around the Commonwealth. VAND’s leadership, along with the national Member Interest and Dietetic Practice Groups leaders denounce the killing of unarmed Black/African Americans due to racial profiling and racist ideologies. We are committed to the health, well-being, inclusion and progress of BIPOC and marginalized groups in our profession and communities.

Specifically, VAND commits to:

  • Establishing an IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) Taskforce
  • Connect with our state members who are members of MIGs to form subcommittees within the IDEA Taskforce
  • Support dietetic/nutrition programs housed in Historically Black Colleges and Universities within the state of Virginia
  • Apply for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics diversity funds to support annual meeting attendance by BIPOC students, interns, and newly credentialed practitioners
  • Increase IDEA professional development opportunities

Committed To The Work

01. IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access)

02. AND Diversity Awards and Grants

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) Mini-Grants provide funds to support Academy affiliate, dietetic practice group, and member interest group outreach to students and professionals from underrepresented groups within the nutrition and dietetics profession. Last year, VAND was proudly awarded money through these grants to fund the efforts of the diversity task force. These funds were used to send dietitians and dietetic interns to the Food and Nutrition Conference Expo (FNCE) for free to support their continued education, as well as give them networking opportunities within the community. Each grant awardee attended one of FNCE’s many DEI sessions, and lead a discussion about that session with VAND members on January 20th.

Grant Recipients

Yanine Pedrazas Terrazas

I am currently an undergraduate student at James Madison University majoring in Dietetics, and  I expect to graduate in May 2022.

I firmly believe knowledge is a powerful tool to share with all individuals, especially those most vulnerable to health disparities. Thus, I am committed to my role as a future Registered Dietitian to advocate for disease prevention and health promotion among racial/ethnic minorities with suboptimal health outcomes.

Educating patients on the power of food as medicine to prevent and or manage chronic diseases such as Diabetes is my biggest motivation to keep moving forward and continue making progress.

My future career goals include working as a clinical dietitian and becoming a Certified Diabetes  Educator and Certified Nutrition Support Clinician.

Additionally, I aspire to acquire a leadership position as a chair in the Diabetes DPG and support efforts advocating for the global diabetes community.

Another goal I have is to help the AYUDA (American Youth Understanding  Diabetes Abroad) non-profit organization by traveling abroad to bring my understanding of diabetes to others around the globe.

I am currently working as a Long Term Care Clinical Dietitian for NutraCo from November 2, 2020 to the present. I am beyond thankful for this opportunity to continue to learn and grow in my care as a Registered Dietitian.

My interests include public health, diabetes education, general wellness, as well as diversity in nutrition and dietetics.
