Legislation and Advocacy – Turning Good Health into Reality
Grassroots Advocacy: A natural, spontaneous, political movement driven by the interests of a community.
VAND Grassroots Advocacy: Virginia RDs/RDNs/DTRs/NDTRs joining together to lend a voice to nutrition and inform the legislative body on nutrition-related issues and the expertise of our profession. Advocacy is a key part of the mission of the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We encourage nutrition professionals in Virginia to enhance your advocacy skills, answer questions about advocacy, and arm yourself with the materials that you’ll need when talking with policymakers and others about nutrition and health.
The Virginia Maternal Mortality Review Board and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has released the 2019 report Chronic Disease in Virginia Pregnancy Associated Deaths, 1999-2012: Need for Coordination of Care, which includes the recommendation that all pregnant women have access to at least one visit with a Registered Dietitian. “Pregnancy Associated death” is defined as the death of a woman while pregnant or within one year of pregnancy regardless of the outcome of the pregnancy or the cause of death.
