Getting involved in public policy is a rewarding experience

Turning Good Health into Reality

Who better?

Love for Where We Are & What We Do

Who better than RDNs and NDTRs to address the nutrition-related aspects of legislative issues? We are the food and nutrition experts, and without your voice there will be a gap in the legislators’ knowledge about food, nutrition, and health.

Getting involved in public policy is a rewarding experience, and you will have the opportunity to make an impact on nutrition-related policies. Some easy ways to get involved are to participate in action alerts, meet with your legislators, and be on the lookout for additional public policy opportunities and events with VAND.

Join us and enjoy seeing the difference your unique expertise will make for Virginians!

Public policy isn’t just a passion for a select few, but of interest to each one of us! One of the most helpful ways we can be an advocate for our profession, our clients, and our patients is to communicate our priorities to the legislators representing us.

See below for my Action Alert picks for this month! Take two minutes out of your day to help make an impact – I promise you won’t regret it!

Medically tailored meals have been shown to improve clinical outcomes, increase food security and reduce hospital readmissions for at-risk patients while decreasing overall health care costs.

Passage of the bipartisan Medically Tailored Meals Act (H.R. 5370) would launch a three-year pilot program to provide medically tailored meals and MNT to eligible Medicare beneficiaries in 20 hospitals around the country.

As schools stretch to respond to food insecurity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic while also facing significant financial losses from this crisis, providing an infusion of additional funding can help ensure schools are prepared to serve healthy, nutritious foods.

This is also an opportunity to equip school kitchens for future emergency scenarios by modernizing kitchen infrastructure and equipment and strengthening workforce training.
